Beyond the Lens – Creating Art

Written by: Tamara Kwan of TammyLynn Photography

This past Sunday I met a friend at Slimbridge WWT, one of my favourite places to hang out with photography friends. The weather man said it was to rain all morning and that we were to have sunny intervals from around lunch time. This is what I told my friend, told him not to worry! The sun is coming! I must have blinked a lot because I never saw the sun. Also, it didn’t stop raining the whole time I was there; and I was there until they kicked us out at closing time! I rode the trusty Burgman Scooter from Fraser’s of Gloucester there and back in the rain. Guess what, its fun even in the rain! I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t get very wet; the Burgman is a lovely ride. I love that bike.

Well, the rain didn’t hamper our fun at the park much either, as there are lots of hides at Slimbridge WWT to sit and watch the wildlife from. My friend and I chatted a lot about his recent trip to America and his new 400mm prime lens. He let me have a play with it and yes I now want one! It will be a long while before I get a new lens, but a girl can dream can’t she?

Anyway, back to the flamingo you see above, which I took on this rainy day. Here is the original photo:

It’s not a bad photo really, but it’s not a wow photo either. I really liked the pose of the flamingo on the left and started having a play in photoshop with the photo. I used layers to darken the background and leave the flamingo bright. I decided to drop the bird on the right. I had originally kept the flamingo’s reflection. This is what it looked like:

I must tell you one more thing before I close, as I heard someone talking on BBC Radio Gloucestershire the other day about the Cuckoo bird. Well, as we were being shooed out of the Kingfisher Hide at closing time we heard a Cuckoo and he was quite close. So all of us started looking for him, even the lovely lady who’d come to make sure the hide was empty so she could lock up was looking for him. Then we saw him! Wow! We were so excited I think we scared him away. And of course none of us had a camera out! Oh well. Next time. ;-)
